Parent's Role

The youth sports leagues provided by Richfield Parks and Recreation should be considered learning and training league at all levels. The success of our youth sports program relies on the assistance of parents
who understand and adopt the above-mentioned goal and principles. Parents who embrace this goal will strive to create and atmosphere where children can learn and grow and feel welcomed.

Sportsmanship

There is no place within any recreation program for any form of verbal or physical abuse from any individual. Anyone guilty of harassment, taunting, swearing or profanity, or any other form of unsportsmanlike conduct may be asked to leave the facility immediately, Failure to comply with the requests of recreation staff may result in a forfeiture of the game, and possible suspension from further participation (as a player, coach, or spectator), and/ or legal action.

Orientation Meetings

A coach's orientation meeting is held before the start of the season of each youth sport. Rosters, schedules, rules, and equipment are distributed, and information on sportsmanship is covered, with and emphasis on the responsibilities of the coach. Coaches must fill out a volunteer coach application which authorizes a criminal history background check, and must read and sign a coach's Code of Conduct.

Team Organization

In general, teams for leagues that includes grades five and up will be formed using a draft system that discourages uneven, or "stacked" teams.

Drafts will take place a few weeks prior to the parent's and coach's meetings. All participants in these leagues will attend a practice session where they will perform various drills and activities that will demonstrate their level and ability in the particular sports. Those parents who volunteered to coach will be in attendance and will watch the participants, noting those that appear to be at a higher level, those that are average, and those that are less experienced, Immediately after the practice session, participants leave and the coaches will work together to organize a specified number of teams with the help of a member of the recreation staff. By design, coaches will not know which team will be theirs, creating an atmosphere where it is in their best interest to ensure that all teams appear as even as possible.

Once teams are set, coaches will draw randomly to pick their team, Coaches' children are not included in the draft, as they will be added to their parent's team after the teams are assigned. Teams may be adjusted if the addition of the coaches' children creates any notable unevenness among them. Also, any requests for individuals to play together may possibly be honored at this time, but only if all the coaches agree on the trades. Once the meeting is over, teams are set and no further trading of players will be allowed.
